Project Overview
GreenCarbon CY aims to develop an integrated and web-based decision support tool for monitoring CO2 emissions and evaluating energy efficiency and circular economy impacts in Cypriot agroecosystems. The approach uses an integrated model that characterizes the study areas’ current state and future risks in terms of Cyprus’s future climate and socio-economic changes. Therefore, advanced earth observation (EO) products, modeling, and scenario simulations are employed to provide local agricultural consortia and administrations, regional organizations, and international institutions with information on the current status.
GGP role is as expert in carbon farming practices and methodologies, digital agriculture, agro-food and farming business modelling.
Project Objectives
- Objective 1: Derivation of in-situ and very high-resolution remote sensing information on atmospheric conditions, soil cover, soil state, vegetation variability, and management practices, as well as upscaling of relevant parameters to Copernicus Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 data for the study sites.
- Objective 2: Assess vegetation and fraction of ground covered by green vegetation (fCover) dynamics with time-series analysis of Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, and MODIS data using cloud-based processing environments.
- Objective 3: Develop hydrogeological models to assess CO2 emissions from the soil surface qualitatively and quantitatively on different spatio-temporal scales, evaluate the capabilities of the adapted management practices to restore soil health and upscale to national scale.
- Objective 4: Design and develop a web-based Decision-Support Tool (DST) that integrates information from the CO2 emission models, EO data, and the stakeholders to strengthen stakeholders’ institutional and managerial capacities. DST will provide forecasts on CO2 emissions and deterioration risk to stakeholders using seasonal climate forecasts of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).
- Objective 5: Delineation of coping and adaptation strategies for sustainable development and management of the agricultural landscapes in the focus area.
- Objective 6: Awareness raising concerning future climate changes, long-term conservation and environ-socio-economic valorization regarding soil management.
- Objective 7: Facilitate effective collaboration between research organisations /academia and industry through the mutual exchange of knowledge and resources, staff mobility
